Incubator PMC/Board report for Nov 2014 ([ppmc])

Marvin

Dear podling,

This email was sent by an automated system on behalf of the Apache Incubator PMC.
It is an initial reminder to give you plenty of time to prepare your quarterly
board report.

The board meeting is scheduled for Wed, 19 November 2014, 10:30 am PST. The report
for your podling will form a part of the Incubator PMC report. The Incubator PMC
requires your report to be submitted 2 weeks before the board meeting, to allow
sufficient time for review and submission (Wed, Nov 5th).

Please submit your report with sufficient time to allow the incubator PMC, and
subsequently board members to review and digest. Again, the very latest you
should submit your report is 2 weeks prior to the board meeting.

Thanks,

The Apache Incubator PMC

Submitting your Report
----------------------

Your report should contain the following:

 * Your project name
 * A brief description of your project, which assumes no knowledge of the project
   or necessarily of its field
 * A list of the three most important issues to address in the move towards
   graduation.
 * Any issues that the Incubator PMC or ASF Board might wish/need to be aware of
 * How has the community developed since the last report
 * How has the project developed since the last report.

This should be appended to the Incubator Wiki page at:

  http://wiki.apache.org/incubator/November2014

Note: This is manually populated. You may need to wait a little before this page
      is created from a template.

Mentors
-------
Mentors should review reports for their project(s) and sign them off on the
Incubator wiki page. Signing off reports shows that you are following the
project - projects that are not signed may raise alarms for the Incubator PMC.

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Nov 2014 ([ppmc])

Robert Metzger
Hi,

here is what I've drafted for the report:

____________________________________________________________

Flink

Flink is an open source system for expressive, declarative, fast, and
efficient data analysis. Flink combines the scalability and programming
flexibility of distributed MapReduce-like platforms with the efficiency,
out-
of-core execution, and query optimization capabilities found in parallel
databases.  Flink was originally known as Stratosphere when it entered the
Incubator.

Flink has been incubating since 2014-04-14.

Three most important issues to address in the move towards graduation:

 1. Community growth

Any issues that the Incubator PMC (IPMC) or ASF Board wish/need to be
aware of?

  None

How has the community developed since the last report?

Two new committers were voted into the project: Márton Balassi and
Gyula Fóra.
There were presentations on Flink at the VLDB keynote, a meetup in
Stockholm (more than 150 participants) and a meetup in Berlin.
There are upcoming talks again in Berlin, Pasadena CA and Palo Alto CA.

How has the project developed since the last report?

Flink has released two major versions (0.6-incubating and
0.7-incubating) in the last three months. (There was also a minor bugfix
release for the 0.6-incubating release).

Date of last release:

 2014-10-26

When were the last committers or PMC members elected?

  2014-09-06

Signed-off-by:

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Nov 2014 ([ppmc])

Márton Balassi
You might want to add the talk at Apache Con Europe (Nov 18, Budapest) as
upcoming. :)

Nice work!

You can add:

 - New integration with other Apache Projects : MRQL and TEZ
(Hadoop/YARN/HBase has always been)

Ted Dunning
I think that the report is still thin.  How many meetings were conducted?
How much traffic is on the mailing lists?  What is the progress on the
rename?

Re: Incubator PMC/Board report for Nov 2014 ([ppmc])

Henry Saputra
Ted, do you mean rename of the podling? I think we mentioned that in
the prev report.

As for info on mailing list, you can send email to
[hidden email] to get current subscriber of dev@
list.
I usually use apache archive to do the math for calculating traffic of
the lists between months from last reporting:
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-flink-dev/
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-flink-user/
http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/incubator-flink-commits/
