[DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Mike Winters
Hello everyone,

I'm writing in to share some ideas for updates to the Flink website that I
believe will make it more approachable and easier to navigate, particularly
for users who are new to the project. I've made an attempt to capture my
ideas in these wireframes
<https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzOPLNZ8zZO5bGJMOU9KRUV6SE0/view>.

I am volunteering to take the lead on updating the site if the community
thinks it'd be a worthwhile endeavor, and I'd also like to hear any
feedback on the wireframes or more general thoughts about the site.

Please keep me posted, and let me know if this should go into a FLIP
instead.

Best,
Mike

Hi Mike,
I like your proposal. It correctly tackles two things that beginners will
appreciate: clearer structure and information about companies that are
using Flink. Especially that last part is important because it's easier to
adopt a new piece of software if you know that other big players are
already using it.

Let's hear what others have to say but I'd be in favour of streamlining the
site a bit.

Cheers,
Aljoscha

I really like your proposal. +1.

I did some of the previous site updates, but never actually had the time to really think it through like you did.

All main changes (start page, intro to Flink, and moving the quick starts) look very cool and well thought out. Looking forward to the initial PR. :)

I agree with Aljoscha and Ufuk. Making the Flink website more accessible
for newcomers would be a big gain :-) +1 for the changes.

In reply to this post by Mike Winters
Hi Mike,

Thanks for the proposal. It's a great idea to restructure the Flink
web site. We have been adding more and more content to the site but it
lacks structure. Especially new users would benefit from changes which
make the web site more discoverable.

From the pdf, it looks like the main changes are:

- Changing the location of the navigation bar and updating its entries
- Better landing page
- Better intro page
- Powered By Flink page
- New Ecosystem page
- Improved Community information

I'm not sure about the layout changes. I actually like having the
navigation bar on the top. It seems to be that most sites tend to have
them on the left side. So if that helps new users I'm fine with it.

For the content changes, it probably makes sense to share them with
the community as early as possible and collect feedback. This could
also happen on a page-per-page basis.

Hi Mike,

I really like the idea! Especially that you pointed out we need a substantial rework on the introduction
page to let users that are new to modern streaming frameworks understand the space first.
With this content as a prelude, once the detailed Flink contents kick in, it will definitely help users to
understand Flink more and better catch how some of its unique features set it apart from other systems.

+1, looking forward to any content / previews that you could probably share with the community so that
we can start collecting feedbacks :)

Best,
Gordon

Re: [DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Mike Winters
Thanks everyone, I appreciate the comments.

As for new content: aside from the graphic on the homepage, the only
significant addition will be an introductory writeup [1]. This doc has
commenting enabled, so please add feedback as you see fit. Note that in
this version of mockups, the current 'Features' page is rolled up in this
introduction. Feedback on whether that makes sense would be helpful, too.

@Max, I was also unsure about the left-hand nav as it's a substantial
change from the status quo, however, I believe it provides more guidance on
a 'logical' order for a new user to move through the site. Definitely open
to other approaches.

I think it's feasible to get a staging site ready to share for next week
and a PR shortly thereafter. Let's see--I'll share as soon as it's ready.
More to come soon.

Best,
Mike

Re: [DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Mike Winters
Hi everyone,

We've made progress on the new site, and here's a version you can run
locally if you'd like to take a look:
https://github.com/wints/flink-web-updates

Should take about a minute to get it running:
1) git clone https://github.com/wints/flink-web-updates.git
2) ./build.sh -p
3) http://localhost:4000/

Feedback is welcome.

Best,
Mike

The changes look great, Mike! Here's a quick screenshot of the front page:
http://pasteboard.co/images/51Tqpm8Ke.png

A quick one liner to paste in your terminal to open a browser window with
the changes:

git clone https://github.com/wints/flink-web-updates web-updates && cd
web-updates && ./build.sh && {./build.sh -p &} && for i in `seq 1 10`; do
sleep 1 && curl -Ss http://localhost:4000 && break; done && open
http://localhost:4000 >/dev/null

Re: [DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Mike Winters
Hi everyone,

For the sake of having many sets of eyes to help catch potential issues, I
decided to wait until after the new year to create a PR for the updated
Flink site.

You can find it here: https://github.com/apache/flink-web/pull/44

Please share any feedback!

Thanks,
Mike

Looks great!

Some minor comments:

- Font page: Maybe put the latest blog posts before the power by logos?
- Nav bar on the left: I noticed that for some links the active color
does not show. Clicking on "Blog" makes highlights the link but not
for others like "Powered By"

Re: [DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Mike Winters
Thanks for the comments, Ufuk.

-I rearranged the front page so that the blog posts come before 'Powered
By' logos--I think this makes sense.
-Nav bar highlights issue is fixed

Just pushed these changes, and the preview site (
https://wints.github.io/flink-web/) has been updated as well.

Best,
Mike

Ufuk Celebi-2
Thanks for addressing my comments. I really like the new web site!

If there are no objections, I would like to merge this later today.

Re: [DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Kostas Tzoumas-2
Love it! I would merge this asap

Some comments (not blockers)

- I was looking for the downloads page for a minute, until I saw that it is
linked via the big blue button :) Did anyone have the same problem?
- Do we still link to the wiki?
- Maybe too much info is buried under the Community & Project Info category?

Re: [DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Till Rohrmann
Great work Mike :-) I like the new web page a lot.

Some comments:

- Can we put a higher resolved Flink logo picture. Looks not good on my
monitor and mobile
- When browsing the web page on my phone, I noticed that all nav bar items
start at the very left border. Maybe some kind of padding would be good
there. (mobile using chrome browser)
- When browsing to a page with anchors (e.g. Introduction to Flink), we
show all the different anchor links at the very beginning of this page. I
think it could be helpful to also show these links in the nav bar if this
page is active

Cheers,
Till

Re: [DISCUSS] Proposed updates to Flink project site

Ufuk Celebi-2
The updated page has been merged: http://flink.apache.org/

Would appreciate it if you took a minute to just browse the web page
and look out for any left over errors.
