[jira] [Created] (FLINK-1534) GSoC project: Distributed pattern matching over Flink streaming

Shang Yuanchun (Jira)
Márton Balassi created FLINK-1534:
-------------------------------------

Summary: GSoC project: Distributed pattern matching over Flink streaming
                 Key: FLINK-1534
                 URL: https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FLINK-1534
             Project: Flink
          Issue Type: New Feature
          Components: Streaming
            Reporter: Márton Balassi
            Priority: Minor

Pattern matching over streams is an important application. The general structure of a streaming pattern matching is the following:

If A event follows B event then trigger some computation.

The support for this feature is associated with complex event processing systems, however it is also adoptable for distributed setting, however it poses additional challenges.

Re: [jira] [Created] (FLINK-1534) GSoC project: Distributed pattern matching over Flink streaming

Cosmin Clapon
Hello,

My name is Cosmin and I'm a 4th year Computer Science student at Politehnica University of Bucharest.

I would like to start contributing to Flink through GSoC on this project.
I am familiar with basic distributed systems concepts and I worked a bit with MapReduce on Hadoop in the past and this project sounds interesting and I could get to learn a lot of new things by contributing to it.

I've already downloaded Flink and I plan to write a small application to get familiar with it.
I've also noticed the "starter issues" list. Could you please give me some directions on choosing an issue that would be somewhat related to the parts involved in this project?

I would really appreciate if you could also provide some tips on how I should get around the idea of this project. Some papers, additional documentation or advices may help.

Hi Cosmin!

Good to hear you are interested to contribute to Flink.

A good way to learn more about the project is having a look at the set of
slides in the materials section on the website:
http://flink.apache.org/material.html

Choose whatever starter issue you like, it really depends on what you like
best. Here is also an issue that is suitable for a starter issue:
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/FLINK-1052

Greetings,
Stephan
