Draft for Project Website

Stephan Ewen
Hi everyone!

We have created a first draft for the project website for "
flink.incubator.apache.org". You can have a look at the draft here:

http://robertmetzger.de/incubator-flink-website/index.html

Big thanks to Ufuk (@uce) for creating the layouts/styles, adjusting the
doing the majority of the contents.

Please let us know what you think and what we need to change to make it
Apache compliant.

When I hover over "DOWNLOAD 0.5.1" and "MAILING LISTS" a dash pops up in
the white space between the buttons.

Re: Draft for Project Website

Fabian Hueske
Nice first draft!

A few comments:
- I think we can remove the "Home" link, the link on "Apache Flink" serves
the same purpose
- The headline "Apache Flink is a platform for efficient, distributed,
general-purpose data processing." and "What is Apache Flink" serve the same
purpose.
- I don't link the combination of the four boxes in 3 colors arranged 2x2
and the wide horizontal orange box.
- I liked the "Features" section of the Stratosphere website. Why not put
all the features also on the frontpage?

Fabian

Can we place a link for a pre-Apache release on the website?

Re: Draft for Project Website

till.rohrmann
I like the draft! Really nice work!

I noticed some minor things:
- in the code example: input.flatMap instead of input.flatmap
- in the system stack picture, the api blocks should align with the right
side of flink optimizer and flink runtime
- in the system stack text: "various different file systems (including
Hadoop Distributed File System, HDFS)" HDFS and the non abbreviated version
are redundant
- The Quickstart => Scala API uses different font and font size than the
other pages
- I'm still undecisive whether I like the font of the Quickstart => Scala
API more than the font used for the other pages...
- I agree with Fabian, that the "Home" link and the "Apache Flink" fulfil
the same purpose

Re: Draft for Project Website

In reply to this post by Stephan Ewen
This is a good start Stephen and I have few comments/suggestions:
1. Some part need to follow ASF incubating guidelines like Thank you
and reference back to ASF [1]
2. The committers section need to be modifed to reflect different
roles in ASF [2]. You can see other ASF projects like
http://tez.incubator.apache.org/team-list.html or
http://incubator.apache.org/drill/team.html for example. Prefer to
call it team page because PPMC (Podling Project Management Committee)
are originally consist of mentors and initial committers that will
work together to govern the project.

Thanks,

Henry

Re: Draft for Project Website

Stephan Ewen
Hi Henry!

Thanks for the pointers!

 - Changing the "committers" page to "Team" sounds good. We will add all
the mentors there (Alan, Henry, Ted, Sean, Owen, Ashutosh). Anyone else?

 - I think we should add an "ASF" menu, with a link to the ASF main page (
http://apache.org) "License" (currently under "Project"), the incubator
proposal.

Reading the podling website guides, I could not fond anythink about "Thank
you". Do you mean a link to "http://www.apache.org/foundation/thanks.html"?

I was also wondering whether we should make "FAQ" a top-level link (it is
under "Documentation" now)

Greetings,
Stephan

Re: Draft for Project Website

Robert Metzger
Thank you for the feedback and comments.

I addressed all comments (except those below) and updated the preview:
http://robertmetzger.de/incubator-flink-website/index.html

Some comments need further discussion:

Fabian said:

What do you mean by that?

- I liked the "Features" section of the Stratosphere website. Why not put
> all the features also on the frontpage?

Do we all agree on that? I would also like to add the feature overview from
the old page.

I'll add the blog/news to the website and do further cleanups (dead link
checking, quickstart scripts) now.

Re: Draft for Project Website

In reply to this post by Stephan Ewen
Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the update.

Yes, I was talking about that "thanks" page. I am agree to specific
ASF menu to collect all ASF related links.

I think FAQ should be at top level because usually people looking at
that before diving in to Documentation page.

Re: Draft for Project Website

In reply to this post by Robert Metzger
I don't like that the elements on top of the page (heading, four boxes,
orange box) is that they have all different width. I think it would look
better if they were somehow aligned.

Also I noticed, there is no link to a download page in the menu.

I would remove the orange box as soon as the code is renamed and we have
made the first Apache Incubator release.

Re: Draft for Project Website

I agree with Stephan to remove the orange box after the first incubator
release (I think we need 1-2 months for that).

@Fabian: I accidentally removed the download link. I'll add it again with
the next preview.
Regarding the boxes: If you want, try to come up with a different
suggestion.

Re: Draft for Project Website

Robert Metzger
I've updated the preview:
http://robertmetzger.de/incubator-flink-website/index.html

- I added the FAQ as a top level element and added the downloads page again.
- Sebastian Kunert did a lot of work regarding the links in the
documentation.
- I improved the color-coding of the system's stack on the front page.
- I added the following sentence here:
http://robertmetzger.de/incubator-flink-website/asf.html "We would
like to thank
the sponsors of the ASF <http://www.apache.org/foundation/thanks.html>, the
Apache Software Foundation itself and its community for supporting Apache
Flink."

Mentors: Do we need a vote for the initial website or can we just publish
it?
Is the website okay from a branding / legal point of view?

I suggest to publish this first version of the website and then
incrementally improve it.

Re: Draft for Project Website

Stephan Ewen
A few comments:

  - You decided not to have an extra top -level link / menu called ASF. Why
not? Because of that, the "Thank you" section is still missing.
  - I find that the style-sheet makes heading too large. Especially sub
headings (h2, h3) are still extremely large, I would decrease the font size
there.

Otherwise, looks good.

I think we should have at least one mentor give its okay (with respect to
apache guidelines).

Re: Draft for Project Website

Robert Metzger
Thanks for the feedback. I got the "ASF" thing wrong. It now has its own
top-level element.
I also decreased the size of h2 and h3 and added the blog.
What do you say about the list of recent news on the front page?

Re: Draft for Project Website

Henry Saputra
This is great looking site.
If we can one more link under ASF I think we are ready to push it to
production: http://www.apache.org/foundation/how-it-works.html

Thanks Stephan and Robert for driving this.

In reply to this post by Robert Metzger
Very nice work!

I personally think that "ASF and Flink" can directly link to "
http://incubator.apache.org/projects/flink.html". The text says basically
the same as the footer that is on every page.

Re: Draft for Project Website

Robert Metzger
Thanks for the feedback.
I've added the link to "How it works" and the incubator status page.

I want to note that Ufuk did most of the work for the website: The initial
design and content, the jekyll plugins and the rework of the documentation
into the repository.

I'm now going to publish the site at http://flink.incubator.apache.org/.

Re: Draft for Project Website

Henry Saputra
Hi Robert, did you push the md source files to svn or git repo?

Re: Draft for Project Website

Robert Metzger
I pushed the md files to the svn repo:
https://svn.apache.org/repos/asf/incubator/flink
The md files of the documentation are in the main git repostiory. The
build.sh script from the svn assembles the md files from the different
locations in the correct way.
